Burnett Spurns The Yankees?
The World Series is over, and now the talk amongst fans, the media, and executives across the sport of baseball will be the discussion of free agency, trades, and what moves will be made.
After an 11th consecutive losing season, the Baltimore Orioles are looking forward to the future and there's talk in amidst the rebuilding that the organization is looking to spend some money. Now, that may involve bringing in some big ticket items -- one which obviously involves talks with Mark Teixiera -- but one other name thrown around has been A.J. Burnett, another Maryland native.
The Baltimore Examiner -- via a report in the New York Post -- noted that the right hander, who is expected to opt out of his contract with the Blue Jays, will probably not want to the join the Yankees.
And now word is spreading that A.J. Burnett will shy away from The Bronx, too.
If Sabathia and Burnett don't want the Yankees' money, the Yanks will be left to dance with Ben Sheets, Derek Lowe, Ryan Dempster and Oliver Perez.
Burnett's agent, Darek Braunecker, denied his client has ruled out the Yankees.
"That is 100-percent wrong," Braunecker said. "If he does indeed opt out of the deal [with Toronto] he will see if the Yankees are interested."
Burnett, who went 18-10 with a 4.07 ERA and fanned 231 in 2211/3 innings for the Blue Jays this past season, can opt out of the final two years ($12 million each) of his contract following the World Series.
While the Blue Jays hope they can keep him - even after he files for free agency - it's likely that the career 87-76 right-hander lands in another uniform.
Texas and Washington expressed stro! ng interest the last time he was a free agent with the Nationa! ls, the only team to offer a fifth year. Tired of losing and watching the Rays join the Red Sox and Yankees as AL East powers, Orioles owner Peter Angelos is talking about going after first baseman Mark Teixeira and Burnett. Each is from Maryland.
I'm going to take all this with a grain of salt. Although Burnett has shown some affinity to playing in Maryland and for the Orioles, the organization is going to have to make an offer -- one that would most likely pay at least eight digits a year.
If you compound that with his injury history, you've got a potential expensive powder keg on your hands. Assuming Burnett can stay healthy, he's one of the better pitchers in baseball and that could be a boon for the Orioles; however, at this point I'm not going to read too much into the news and it's buyer beware for me.
The Day After
After having a day to digest the news of Mark Teixeira signing with the Evil Empire, and I'll say I can't blame him for signing with New York, nor the Yankees for signing him. You can't blame Andy MacPhail or Peter Angelos -- despite the history and how many feel about him -- due to simply the Orioles not having a chance at all.
The slugger, the more I hear in the press had zero interest in playing for Baltimore, and the news that came out insinuating he did may have just been planted by Scott Boras to drive up interest in his client.
If the events of yesterday have not convinced you that the sport needs a salary cap, I don't know what to say. It's one thing if the Yankees had one huge contract signing -- but three within the last two weeks -- who could compete with that in today's economy?
The inequity in baseball between the haves (the New York, Los Angeles & Chicago teams, Boston) and have nots (everyone else) has now become so great t! hat you have to wonder if the gap can be closed. Now, can we assume that the Yankess will win the AL East, much get to the World Series? No.
But their job is much, much easier than let's say a Cincinnati, or Milwaukee or Kansas City.
I'm pro-business, but how will most fans -- everyday people -- even see the Yankees now or much less even get a ticket up there? Man, the price of tickets after the inaugural season at the new ballpark will sky rocket.
I guess there's nothing technically wrong with the Yankees participating in capitalism; however, it just leaves a bad taste in sports fans mouths to see this going on when the economy is in the tank.

According to the AP, Jim Bowden resigned Sunday after four seasons as the team's general manager, due to the impact of a federal investigation into the skimming of signing bonuses given to Latin American prospects.
O's Lose to the Evil Empire, Something Wrong With Guthrie?
One has to wonder if there's something wrong physically or mechanically with Jeremy Guthrie. Our defacto ace has looked nothing like the pitcher we have seen in the last two years in the past month, and it may be a a cause for concern. Whether he's just not hitting his spots, or what, the results have not been good. He took the loss on Wednesday, as he went seven innings and gave up five runs; however, despite his poor start -- giving up four runs in the f! irst two innings -- he settled in and got his work done.

And why is this game being played now?
... um, because of Derek Jeter. If this were anyone else in baseball, this game is not played. Yes, I said it -- this game is being played to make sure he gets the record on Friday night. I don't think anyone wants to endure a doubleheader on Saturday.

Prucha/Dawes/Kalinin update: I figured I'd give a quick update on the status of these players, since I know that I for one will be keeping on my eye on Prucha's Phoenix career. Prucha played 16 minutes for the Coyotes last night, spending much of the game on the top line with Matthew Lombardi and Shane Doan. Nigel Dawes assisted on the game winning goal by Scottie Upshall (also acquired by the Coyotes on Wednesday) in the 2-1 win over Boston. The Coyotes didn't waste any time in giving Dimitri Kalinin 22 minutes of ice time. Also, a game recap by the Associated Press gave us a little visual of Prucha's debut as ' Zdeno Chara flattened Petr Prucha in the first period, choosing to take out the Coyotes forward instead of keeping the puck in the zone.'
MacTavish Fired By Oilers...Renney Next Coach?

After eight seasons behind the Edmonton Oilers' bench and three straight seasons without a playoff berth, Craig MacTavish has been relieved of his duties as head coach.
Ranger Rants is already speculating that Tom Renney may be the next in line for the Oilers coaching job. He's a good man and deserves another shot somewhere.

I think it's safe to say that over the past decade and a half the Rangers draft success with their first round picks has been pretty bad [that's putting it nicely]. Here are the New York Rangers first round picks in each NHL Entry Draft since the 1994 Draft. Especially the disaster in 2003, one of the most talented draft classes in recent years and the Rangers managed to select Hugh Jessiman. The picks after 2004 can hopefully continue to show progress.

Mark Messier Given Front Office Position With Rangers
It looks like Larry Brooks is full of Rangers news today. As we posted earlier, Brooks has the details of the Rangers signing Vinnie Prospal. He also has some more interesting news, Mark Messier is back in the New York Rangers organization.
Mark Messier is rejoining the Rangers' organization as special assistant to club president Glen Sather, The Post has learned. It will mark Messier's first job in hockey -- and first full-time job, period -- since he ended his playing career following the 2003-04 season.Immediately people are probably assuming that this is preparing Messier for the General Manager's position once Glen Sather eventually retires. But, according to Brooks:
This move should not be interpreted as Sather hiring his successor. Messier! is not the heir apparent. Rather, he is assuming the same type of apprentice position that contemporaries such as Steve Yzerman (Detroit), Cam Neely (Boston) and Al MacInnis (St. Louis) have assumed with their respective franchises.I have trouble believing that if Messier wants the job when Sather eventually steps down, that Messier won't be given much higher priority over the other possible candidates. It's been rumored for some time now that Messier wants to get back into hockey and it was assumed that it would either be with the Rangers or the Edmonton Oilers.
The Post has learned that coach Tom Renney approached Messier last season about the possibility of working with the coaching staff this season. It also has been learned that Messier interviewed this summer for the vacant coaching position in Edmonton that ultimately went to Pat Quinn (with Renney as his associate).Time will tell what this means for both the Rangers ! and Mark Messier.

Di belakang penyerang masing-masing tim punya gelandang elegan. Di MU ada Ryan Giggs dan Paul Scholes sementara El Barca punya Xavi Hernandez dan Andres Iniesta. Alhasil, tontonan menarik akan menjadi sebuah jaminan. Final liga champion kali ini juga akan menjadi ajang pembuktian dua pemain t! erbaik dunia saat ini, Ronaldo vs Messi.

Lalu ketika pertandingan memasuki injury time, Martin Palermo tampil sebagai pahlawan di menit 94. Golnya membuat pasukan Diego Maradona ini akhirnya kembali unggul 2-1 dan akhirnya meraih kemenangan.
Bagi Argentina, kemenangan ini memupus tiga hasil buruk sebelumnya, di mana mereka selalu kalah--dari Ekuador, Brasil dan Paraguay. Posisi mereka pun naik satu peringkat di klasemen sementara kualifikasi zona Amerika Selatan.

Babak kedua memasuki menit 47, Higuain akhirnya memecah kebunt! uan timnya. Memanfaatkan assist dari Pablo Aimar ia akhirnya sukses membuat jala Butron robek. Argentina unggul 1-0.
Pada menit 59, Juan Manuel Vargas melepaskan tendangan tepat ke arah gawang Argentina. Tetapi usahanya ini tak membuahkan hasil setelah kiper 'Tim Tango', Sergio German Romero, berhasil menyelamatkan gawangnya.
Peru baru bisa menyamakan kedudukan ketika laga memasuki menit 90. Memanfaatkan umpan dari Roberto Palacios, Hernan Rengifo kemudian melakukan sebuah sundulan. Usahanya ini akhirnya membuat Romero harus memungut bola dari gawangnya.
Ketika pertandingan memasuki menit 94, Argentina akhirnya lolos dari lubang jarum. Martin Palermo menjadi pahlawannya. Ia mengubah kedudukan menjadi 2-1 usai berhasil memanfaatkan bola operan dari sisi kanan.
Peluit panjang dibunyikan tak lama setelahnya. Argentina pun sukses meraih tiga poin di kandang sendiri.

Barcelona Wins The Champions League Final
Barcelona FC won after making scores 2-0 versus Manchester United. The two Barcelona's goals were made by Samuel Eto'o and Lionel Messi. Samuel Eto'o made the goal at 10th minute that can be stopped by Edwin van Dersar, Manchester United's goal keeper. And than! , Linel Messi made score in 70th minute by his heading after a! ccepting the ball from Xavi Hernandez. This victory has completed the other victories of Barcelona. As we know, before winning this champions league final, Barcelona has won Cope del Rey and Spain La Liga tittle. Bravo Barca! Congratulations Barcelona!
Reports On Israeli Star Untrue

It has been reported by many sources that Tottenham are in a three-way fight for £2million Israeli star Yossi Benayoun.
This story is completely untrue. Racing Santander's Yossi Benayoun has been linked with Tottenham Hotspur for the past three consecutive seasons as his agent tries to get him a new contract or a lucrative move away from the Spanish club.
Bolton and Newcastle may be interested in him, but it has been rumored that these reports are also unfounded.
Like the case of many foreign agents within the game nowadays, players are linked to clubs they have never heard of in many cases.

We would like to wish Paul Robinson the best of luck at his new club, Blackburn Rovers.
Paul was a loyal Spurs player, but his bout of bad confidence put him on a downward slope that was so difficult to pull away from.
We believe that a new start will give him the confidence he needs to become England's number 1 once again.

Jermain Defoe has become Harry Redknapp's first signing as Tottenham Hotspur manager and has spoken at his delight in rejoining Spurs.

Unfortunately, Jermain arrived a little too late to be registered to play in tonight's Carling Cup semi-final against Burnley, but should make the team-sheet against Wigan on Sunday, given that he passes his medical.
We wish Jermain Defoe the best of luck and know that he will score a hat load of goals for us.
What does this mean for the futures of Darren Bent or Roman Pavlyuchenko? Defoe is sure to be the first-choice striker at the club, meaning that Harry will partner him with either two of the above mentioned ! strikers, or not, if we are to play the 4-5-1 formation with Modric in behind Defoe.
I feel that Bent will be sacrificed as Everton are known to be in for a striker and have made enquires about Darren in the past. Everton though, have no money, and so Newcastle could be in for him. Maybe we could swap Bent for Owen?

Chelsea dikabarkan sudah mengajukan penawaran sebesar delapan juta poundsterling plus mengoper Claudio Pizarro ke San Siro sebagai bagian dari kesepakatan tersebut. Isu kepindahan Pirlo, yang hingga kini berhembus, sepertinya masih butuh waktu lama untuk bisa mereda. Satu-satunya hasil memuaskan di periode itu cuma dituai Rossoneri ketika mengalahkan Juventus untuk merebut Trofeo Berlusconi.Apa yang diraih Milan itu sempat bikin Wakil Presiden Adriano Galliani merisaukan laga perdana di Seri A kontra Siena. Milan Tersiksa Libur Kompetisi
MILAN - Kekalahan telak atas Inter Milan tak dipungkiri membuat kubu AC Milan menderita. Diakui Massimo Ambrosini, Rossoneri makin merasa tersiksa lantaran libur kompetisi.Di seluruh Eropa, jadwal kompetisi lokal memang ditiadakan sejak matchday Liga terakhir yang dilangsungkan pada 30 Agustus lalu. Akhir pekan kemarin, Minggu (6/9/2009), dan tengah pekan ini, Rabu (9/9/2009), roda kompetisi diselingi Kualifikasi Piala Dunia 2010.
Buat Milan, libur bertanding selama dua pekan tersebut terasa san! gat menyiksa. Soalnya periode tersebut berjalan setelah mereka menelan kekalahan memalukan atas Inter Milan dengan 0-4. "Merujuk pada laga derby, masalahnya adalah kami menjalani 15 hari tanpa pertandingan," ungkap Ambrosini seperti diberitakan Goal.
Libur kompetisi tersebut diakui Ambrosini membuat Rossoneri terpaksa membawa kekecewaan dan kesedihan pasca kekalahan atas Inter. Padahal andai ada pertandingan lain setelah pertemuan dengan Nerazzurri, Milan diyakini akan bisa membalaskan hasil tersebut dan menjalani libur kompetisi dengan tenang.
"Ada banyak hari setelah pertandingan (dengan Inter) untuk menuju laga berikutnya, kami memilih untuk langsung (berlaga) demi punya kesempatan melakukan penebusan pada diri sendiri. Dengan libur ini kami membawa kekalahan tersebut selama 15 hari dan masih berlanjut hingga kini," sambung gelandang yang baru memperpanjang kontraknya itu.
Milan akan bertandang ke Livorno dalam lanjutan Liga Italia pada Sabtu (12/8/2009) a! khir pekan ini. Mengomentari laga tersebut, Ambrosini menegask! an kalau skuad Diavolo Rosso sangat optimistis untuk bisa kembali meraih kemenangan.
"Kami tetap optimistis, seperti sebelum dan setelah pertandingan dengan Siena. Kami butuh, seperti semua hal, kondisi yang baik untuk melakukan evaluasi terjadap semua kondisi ini," pungkas dia.
Kapan Bangkit, Milan?
MILAN - Dari enam laga Seri A, AC Milan baru bikin tiga gol, kebobolan enam dan tercecer di luar sepuluh besar. Tapi Leonardo tetap yakin Milan akan bisa mengasah ketajaman dan mengilapkan penampilan. Sampai dengan giornata keenam Seri A, Milan adalah tim dengan produktivitas terendah ketiga. Tiga gol yang baru dilesakkan Alexandre Pato cs membuat mereka hanya unggul dari dua tim terbawah, Livorno (satu gol) dan Atalanta (dua gol). Kesulitan dalam bikin gol itu disadari benar oleh Leonardo yang baru menangani Mila! n pada musim panas ini.
"Kami kurang di dalam sentuhan terakhir, dalam arti kami harusnya tetap bisa bikin gol bahkan saat kami bermain kurang bagus," tukas dia di situs Milan. "Kami harus lebih banyak mencari ruang, berusaha mengecoh pemain lawan yang menempel kami, mencoba mencari alternatif lain dalam bikin gol. Karakteristik kami adalah tiba di area penalti dengan bola, tapi jika lawan memberikan celah maka kami juga bisa menembakkan bola dari luar kotak.
Ini bisa jadi solusi, tapi tak ada masalah dalam penyerangan," papar dia. Apapun, statistik tetap mencatat bahwa Milan masih mengecewakan. Dua kali menang, dua kali imbang dan dua kali kalah sehingga berada di posisi 11 jelas bukan hasil positif untuk sebuah klub raksasa Italia dan juga Eropa.
Kian negat! if saat melihat catatan Milan yang gawangnya sudah enam kali j! ebol. Ar tinya, dengan baru bikin tiga gol ke gawang lawan Rossoneri sudah defisit tiga gol. Dengan demikian, juga terindikasi bahwa kendala Milan bukan hanya dalam perkara bikin gol belaka.

Musim memang masih panjang, tapi Milan tak ayal harus segera mulai bangkit dan berlari mengejar ketinggalan demi bisa bersaing dengan para tim-tim besar lain macam Juventus dan Inter Milan yang secara berurutan ada di posisi dua dan tiga.
"Mari kita semua tenang dan fokus ke diri kami sendiri, tentang tumbuh dan menajamkan senjata yang kami miliki untuk bisa bersaing. Ini adalah tim hebat, dengan kualitas individu mengilap. Kami tak boleh putus asa, yang harus kami lakukan adalah menangani situasi ini dengan baik," tandas Leonardo.
Musim lalu Milan berhasil mengak! hiri musim di posisi tiga klasemen dengan raihan angka menyamai Juventus (74 poin) dan tertinggal sepuluh poin dari si jawara Inter. Bersama Inter, Milan adalah tim dengan produktivitas tertinggi di Seri A musim itu, yakni 70 gol.

Chelsea v Liverpool preview
Ex-AC Milan boss Carlo Ancelotti is now in charge of the Blues, meaning he will recommence his battle with Rafa Benitez following two UEFA Champions League final clashes in the past.
Liverpool manager Benitez came out on top following a dramatic penalty shoot-out in the memorable 2005 encounter in Istanbul, while Ancelotti and Milan gained revenge two years later in Athens.

MANCINI PIEGA IL BAYERN
Con una rete di Mancini al 7' della ripresa l'Inter batte il Bayern per 1-0 all'Allianz Arena di Monaco e si aggiudica la 12.a edizione del Trofeo Pirelli. Nel primo tempo i nerazzurri si limitano a difendere, lasciando l'iniziativa ai tedeschi. A inizio ripresa gli uomini di Mourinho trovano la rete del vantaggio con il brasiliano e poi si limitano a controllare la gara. Decisivo Toldo in almeno tre occasioni.
L'Inter dunque supera il primo vero esame andando a vincere in casa dei campioni di Germania. I lavori in casa nerazzurra sono ancora in corso ma un risultato positivo ottenuto contro un avversario di questo calibro può sicuramente facilitare il lavoro di Mourinho, che comunque non bisogna dimenticare, ha mandato in campo una difesa che dire d'emergenza è poco, con Cambiasso centrale al fianco di Burdisso.
Nel primo tempo l'Inter pensa sostanzialmente a difendersi, lasciando al Bayern il pallino del gioco. Doveva essere la sua giornata, la sua prima apparizione con la maglia nerazzurra, e Ricardo Quaresma non ha tradito le! attese. ADRI E CRUZ,ECCO LE VITTIME DI MOURINHO
Non ci saranno Adriano e Cruz nell'Inter che mercoledì sera affronterà la Fiorentina. Mourinho ha deciso di non convocare l'argentino dopo la negativa prestazione con il Genoa, escludendo anche il brasiliano non per quanto accaduto nella partita di domenica o per la successiva notte brava in discoteca ma per il ritardo all'ultimo allenamento: è stato rispedito a casa. Il tecnico portoghese ha glissato le domande sull'argomento: "No comment".
I due hanno avuto un confronto e alla fine il tecnico nerazzurro ha rimandato a casa l'attaccante, che ha lasciato il centro tecnico dell'Inter con la sua auto. Assieme a Flamini". Chiuso il discorso Kakà, l'amministratore delegato del Milan è tornato poi sul capitolo scudetto: "L'obiettivo scudetto resta, noi crediamo di ave! re una s quadra ultracompetitiva, ma 6-7 infortunati sono tanti. Ci serve un po' di salute. Nella scorsa stagione abbiamo vinto due trofei, e speriamo di vincere qualcosa anche quest'anno".
Galliani ha anche fatto un'ulteriore analisi della scorsa stagione: "La stagione 2007-2008 calcistica ci ha visto vincere due trofei, siamo arrivati a 26 trofei nei 20 anni di presidenza Berlusconi. Speriamo di vincere altro nella stagione. Stiamo competendo nel campionato italiano, per lo scudetto, e in coppa Uefa. Ved! iamo se riusciamo a vincere almeno una di queste".
Infine, su Leonardo futuro allenatore del Milan, l'ad rossonero ha detto: "L'ho voluto io e gli voglio bene, ma per queste cose è presto parlarne. Prima prenda il patentino".
QUARESMA ADDIO,C'E' JENAS
La maledetta domenica di Quaresma, culminata con l'esclusione dalla lista Champions, è stata con ogni probabilità l'ultima con la maglia dell'Inter, almeno in questa stagione. Dopo sei mesi disastrosi, il portoghese, scaricato dallo stesso Mourinho che lo ha fortemente voluto, sarà infatti pedina di scambio per l'arrivo in prestito a Milano del centrocampista del Tottenham e della Nazionale inglese Jermaine Jenas, molto apprezzato dal tecnico.
L'avventura in nerazzurro di quello che è stato l'acquisto più costoso di Moratti e in gene! rale dell'intera Serie A nel mercato estivo (al Porto sono andati circa 25 milioni di euro) potrebbe essere già arrivata al capolinea, almeno per questa stagione poi chissà. Nel match contro il Torino Quaresma ha offerto un'altra prestazione imbarazzante tanto da essere definitivamente scaricato dal suo mentore ("Del suo rendimento sono deluso perché è stato l'unico che ho chiesto espressamente alla società. Mi ha deluso"), che lo ha lasciato fuori dalla lista Champions, dandogli di fatto il colpo di grazia.
Ecco perché Quaresma è destinato a dire addio all'Inter, almeno da qui a giugno. E chissà che lontano da Milano e da San Siro, che gli riserva ormai soltanto bordate di fischi, non ritrovi lo smalto di un tempo. All'orizzonte si profila infatti un clamoroso scambio con il Tottenham: alla corte di Mourinho arriverebbe il 25enne nazionale inglese Jermaine Jenas, sul quale recentemente il tecnico portoghese ha espresso giudizi lusinghieri. CASSANO-PAZZO E L'INTER E' KO
Doveva essere una prova di forza dell'Inter, dopo le polemiche seguenti alle dichiarazioni di Mourinho. E' stata invece una disfatta per i nerazzurri, che a Marassi, nell'andata della seconda semifinale di Coppa Italia, hanno ceduto per 3-0 alla Sampdoria. Rete di Cassano e doppietta di Pazzini nel primo tempo, mentre nella ripresa l'Inter non ha approfittato dell'espulsione di Gastaldello, a causa anche delle grandi parate di Castellazzi.
LA PARTITA
Difesa a tre? Bocciata. Centrocampo con Vieira e Muntari al centro? Bocciato. Tridente con il rientro di Mancini? Bocciato. Non si salva niente nell'Inter che frana a Genova. Quando Cassano, dopo meno di dieci minuti, ruba palla a un impresentabile Rivas e deposita alle spalle di Toldo, si capisce subito come sarà la serata nerazzurra.
Vulnerabile dietro e non in grado di produrre un gioco corale, l'Inter naufraga infatti sotto i colpi di Pazzini, bravo a sfruttare prima una nuova incertezza di R! ivas, poi un liscio di Cordoba. E' l'ennesimo primo tempo da dimenticare della squadra di Mourinho, ma a Manchester non si potrà evitare di scendere in campo per i primi 45'. La ripresa porta qualche barlume di gioco in più, sia per la presenza di Maicon sul terreno di gioco, sia perchè Gastaldello, già ammonito, commette un duro intervento su Balotelli, venendo giustamente espulso. La pressione dell'Inter si infrange però su un sontuoso Castellazzi, semplicemente strepitoso nel respingere un'incornata di Crespo. A completare la serata negativa nerazzurra, si aggiunge l'uscita di Balotelli, che, un paio di minuti dopo aver sbattuto contro il palo ed essersi allontanato sorridendo, si accascia a terra, mettendo una grande paura e riprendendo fortunatamente conoscenza poco dopo.
Dopo 5' di recupero finisce 3-0 per la Sampdoria, con una seria ipoteca messa dai blucerchiati sulla qualificazione. Conoscendo Mourinho, c'è da immaginare il discorso di fuoco che farà ai! suoi giocatori. Cosa che, a confronto, la sfuriata di martedì! in conf erenza stampa diventa una piacevole chiacchierata.

MILANO - Vista la precaria condizione fisica di Arnautovic, Jose Mourinho, urge di una nuova prima punta "mobile". Il nome nuovo è Federico Macheda, autentica rivelazione del Manchester United. Per assicurarselo saranno necessari oltre 10 milioni di euro. Tuttavia sarà una pista difficile da percorrere dati gli addii di Tevez e, soprattutto, Ronaldo.

Aquilani wants to give it all for the title
New signing Alberto Aquilani is confident he can play a key role in Liverpool's efforts to win their first league title since 1990.
The Italian signed a five-year contract with the club earlier this month as a replacement for the departing Xabi Alonso.
Despite an ankle problem likely to keep him on the sidelines until the autumn, Aquilani is sure he can add something different to Liverpool's play and help deliver a coveted championship trophy.
"I have sign! ed for five years, I want to be here as long as possible, though I would prefer to be out of action for a brief period now rather than being out of action for a longer time later on," said Aquilani. "This is a long championship, there are lots of games.
"All I can say is I will give it my best, I will give it my all, and I hope to start as soon as possible."
Aquilani is relishing the prospect of lining up in a Liverpool side for the first time - but he is keen not to rush his rehabilitation.
The 25-year-old is currently working with the club's doctors to ensure his time on the sidelines is not lengthy.
Though not able to play, Rafa Benitez's linguistic talents are ensuring he feels part of things.
"Yes, obviously it is important for me that he speaks Italian, but he has told me that he wants me to speak English," said Aquilani. "He thinks it's important that I learn to speak English, with him, with the pl! ayers, and with everyone else at the club.
"But ! obviousl y it will be an advantage right now because if there is anything I don't understand he can help me."
Aquilani added: "I saw immediately the importance of what a technician he is and how ambitious the club is, and I am very proud to have been chosen to be a part of it.
"Rafa is obviously looking for a player with my qualities, and he hopes I will shine on the pitch. I had a very good impression of him when I first met him, but I had already seen how successful he is from watching in Italy. I saw how well prepared he is every time, and I know that I can improve and learn a lot from him."
Aquilani is also pleased the Reds have another Italian in their ranks - Andrea Dossena.
"It is definitely a good thing that Dossena is here," he said. "We have played together in the national team, and he will be useful, especially at first if there is anything I don't understand, but my plan is to learn English as soon as possible."

Liverpool v Burnley preview
This was supposed to be the season Rafa Benitez's Reds ended a long wait for a league title on Merseyside.
But they have made a horribly stuttering start to their campaign, which has included defeats to Tottenham and Aston Villa, and a late win over Bolton.
Last season's Championship play-off winners Burnley, meanwhile, have shocked many by beating Manchester United and Everton at Turf Moor.
A gruelling fixture list had critics suggesting that Owen Coyle's side would be cast adrift at the foot of the table by the end of September, but they have surprised.
The Clarets, though, will be wary when travelling to Anfield after a heavy defeat at Chelsea suggested there could be weaknesses on away days.
Concerns
But, with the international break now complete, Liverpool will also have concerns against newly-promoted opposition on home soil following draws against Stoke and Hull City last season, while memories of Barnsley an! d Watford still haunt.
Liverpool could have Brazilian full-back Fabio Aurelio returning to the squad for the first time this campaign after knee surgery.
But summer signing Alberto Aquilani is still missing as the former Roma star recovers from an ankle injury, while Daniel Agger is sidelined with a back problem.
The likes of Steven Gerrard, Fernando Torres, Dirk Kuyt, Glen Johnson - who has a point to prove following international criticism - and Martin Skrtel were all in World Cup action in midweek.
Burnley are expected to give a debut to David Nugent, signed on loan from Portsmouth, against the club where he began his youth career.
Coyle has Richard Eckersley available again following a one-match ban, while Marten Paterson was in action for Northern Ireland in midweek.

Roddick wins but seeds crash out
Top seed Andy Roddick strolled into round three of the ATP Legg Mason Tennis Classic in Washington DC as several other seeds tumbled out.
Roddick beat Germany's Benjamin Becker 6-3 6-2 but French number three seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga lost 4-6 7-6 (7-2) 7-6 (7-4) to United States' John Isner.
Seventh seed Tommy Robredo also fell, 6-3 6-2 to Spanish compatriot Juan Carlos Ferrero.
American Mardy Fish, seeded nine, lost 1-6 6-4 6-1 to Philipp Petzschner.
Roddick was making his return following a four-week lay-off after injuring his hip during his epic five-s! et Wimbledon final defeat by Roger Federer.
"I wanted to work my way into the match, get some rallies going and try to do the basics well," said the world number five.

Other seeds to fall included Serbia's Viktor Troicki who retired with a foot injury when trailing 3-0 to Frenchman Marc Gicquel.
American W! ayne Odesnik rallied to overcome 13th seed Igor Andreev of Russia 2-6 7-5 6-4 and French qualifier Sebastien de Chaunac was a 3-6 7-6 (7-3) 7-5 winner against 14th-seeded Russian Dmitry Tursunov.
Fourth seed Fernando Gonzalez of Chile defeated Alejandro Falla of Colombia 7-5 7-5 and Sweden's number five seed Robin Soderling breezed past Russia's Mikhail Youzhny 6-3 6-1.

Britain's world number three Paul Casey is out of this week's Barclays event in New Jersey, the first leg of the US Tour's FedEx Cup play-off series.
The 32-year-old is suffering from a rib muscle injury but hopes to return at the Deutsche Ban! k Championship in Boston next week.
Casey, a three-time winner this season, picked up the problem during a practice session before the Open last month.
"It has been a really frustrating few weeks," said Casey.
The Englishman came 47th in the Open at Turnberry but pulled out during the first round of the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational three weeks ago and missed the USPGA, the final major of the year which was won by YE Yang.
"I had hoped to be back out on Tour this week," added Casey. "However, I feel pretty lucky that it wasn't more serious and that the injury has responded to treatment so well.
"I am really hoping that it continues to improve and I will be teeing it up in Boston next Thursday."
Casey is still u! ndergoing a course of intensive treatment, including having a ! cortison e injection to the intercostal muscle to assist the recovery of both a tear and a strain.
Earlier this month Casey lost his lead on the European "Race to Dubai" money list to German Martin Kaymer, and lies 18th in the FedEx Cup standings.
The end-of-season play-off series in the United States features four events, with the field whittled down after each according to the FedEX Cup points table.
Points accrued during the regular season count for the first three events.
Tiger Woods leads the standings with 125 players set to compete at The Barclays, 100 at the Deutsche Bank Championship (4-7 Sept), 70 at the BMW Championship (10-13 Sept) and 30 at the season-ending Tour Championship (24-27 Sept).

Just 42.3 overs were possible in Johannesburg before the match was abandoned
India are still in with a chance of reaching the ! Champions Trophy semi-finals after their match with Australia was abandoned because of rain.
Half centuries for Ricky Ponting and Mike Hussey had propelled the Aussies to 234-4 after 42.3 overs, and within sight of a big total in Pretoria.
However, having threatened all day, the expected rain storm arrived and play was called off at 1840 local time.
India now have to beat West Indies on Wednesday if they hope to progress.
With Pakistan already into the last four with two wins from two games, India have one point and Australia three.
That means Mahendra Dhoni's men must beat the Windies convincingly and hope Pakistan see off Australia in Wednesday's other match.

On the field, India made a much-improved start compared to the one they made against Pakistan with Ashish Nehra (1-38) and Praveen Kumar, in the team in place of RP Singh, bowling impressively to the openers after Ponting had won the toss and opted to bat.
Shane Watson was removed for a duck, the opener top-edging a pull to Harbhajan Singh at mid-wicket, leaving Tim Paine and Ponting to weather the early storm.
However, the introduction of the off-colour Ishant Sharma (1-53) broke the shackles as Paine and Ponting took 16 fr! om his first over and then brought up their 50 partnership from 52 balls.
The Australian wicketkeeper soon raised his half century from 51 deliveries before mistiming a sweep to Harbhajan, but Hussey and Ponting continued to punish the Indian attack.
An excellent direct hit from Gautam Gambhir in the cover boundary region ended the partnership at 88, bringing an end to Ponting's 88-ball knock after he attempted a second run and was run-out at the non-strikers end.
But that only brought Cameron White to the crease and, while Hussey lobbed to Sachin Tendulkar at long-off later in the piece, the number five batsman added a brisk 35 runs to the Aussies' total.
That left them poised to launch a late-order assault in a bid to pass 300, but the rain came in and forced a premature end to proceedings.
