SFS FLASHBACKS: EUROPEAN CUP S/FINAL 1989 - AC MILAN 5 - REAL MADRID 0

Bogey Teken Kontrak

Dua pemain berposisi gelandang kemarin (19/10) sore melamar dan mengikuti latihan bersama tim Persibo Bojonegoro. Keduanya, Encang dari Bandung, dan Dedy Jayadi asal Medan.

Keduanya langsung bergabung dan mengikuti latihan rutin Persibo di Stadion Letjen H. Soedirman, Bojonegoro. Latihan dipimpin langsung oleh pelatih Persibo Sartono Anwar. Hasilnya?

Mengenai besaran nilai kontrak, Sardjono enggan menjelaskan. (ade/jpnn)

WUSA 2009

Another positive development is the deal that the league reached with Soccer United Marketing, which has signed on to sell corporate sponsorships and handle the league's licensing agreements. Given the success SUM has had in marketing MLS, the Mexican national team and various other international events in North America, having the company by the league's side should give the new venture some added credibility and serve to calm the nerves of potential sponsors.
"I think it has to provide a level of comfort to corporate America," said Carter about the partnership. "SUM understands the soccer world; they understand these marketing partnerships, and if you are going to outsource a critical part of your business, and you're in the soccer business, then SUM is the way to go."

Coach-player relationships

There have been plenty of coach-player relationships in the past.
They just happened between male coaches and female athletes. Women's soccer stars Brandi Chastain, Danielle Fotopoulos and Julie Foudy all married their former college coaches.
The salient question, I think, is whether those relationships began while those players were being coached by their future husbands. In one or two of these cases, there have been whispers that they were, but nothing definite.

De Villiers Reaches Out

Springbok coach, Peter de Villiers, was at the opening of the Zevenwacht Mall in Kuilsriver this morning and handed out some complimentary cake and ice-cream.

He spent some time chatting to the locals as well as joking with the kids.

De Villiers says he's keen on his first session with the Springboks at the University of Stellenbosch later this year.

Pienaar and Modise pull the strings

Teko Modise and Steven Pienaar have finally learnt to play together in the same team and Bafana are the big winners. Modise provided the spark in the midfield and Pienaar's touches got the team going forward as Bafana put 4 in the net against Equatorial Guinea.

Modise's brilliance was complimented by the defensive Kagisho Dikgacoi (who scored twice!) in the middle, but Macbeth Sibaya was a passenger for most of the match. Bafana's attack however failed to create many opportunities for Thembinkosi Fanteni. He failed to click with strike partner Surprise Moriri, whose low work rate doesn't help much.

Itumuleng Khune looked bright and energetic between the poles, but really had no work to do. Bevan Fransman's concussion means he'll probably miss the next Afcon away match against Sierra Leone on Saturday.

Drive Headlines

Lions coach Loffie Eloff says Joe van Niekerk's test experience is probably the main reason for his selection. van Niekerk will start at number eight for the Boks against the All Blacks in the Tri-Nations opener in Wellington on Saturday.

***

Meanwhile, Former Springbok, Tiaan Strauss, says the Web Ellis Cup and the number one ranking, will fuel the All Blacks' desire to beat the Boks in the first test since the Rugby World Cup, but he's still confident the Boks can do it.

***

Defending Wimbledon champion, Venus Williams, has advanced to the final of the tournament. She defeated Elena Dementieva 6 – 1 7 – 6.

***

England have named and unchanged side to play the Proteas in the first test at Lords next Thursday. Andrew Flintoff did not make the side as he is still recovering from a side strain. Captain Michael Vaughn is included even though he has a knee injury.

***

There's ! no clear favourite for this year's Tour de France. The editor of Bicycling Magazine, Tim Brink, says this will make for an exciting race, with teams trying to get as many stage wins as possible. Brink says Australian Cadel Evans who finished second last year and rides for the Silence team is in with a shout.

***

Oscar Pistorius says he was surprised by his slow time at a track meet against able-bodied athletes. The 'Blade Runner' finished fourth at the Milan meet in a time of 47.78 seconds. He needs a time of 45.55 seconds to qualify for the Olympics.
***

The top man in Formula One says this weekend's British Grand Prix could be the last for the foreseeable future. Bernie Ecclestone wants the Silverstone circuit to be modernised, bringing it to the standard of other tracks around the world. He says if that doesn't happen quickly, he can't see another British venue which would be suitable.

Boks Fighting for Survival

The Springboks have their backs to the wall and have only one option against the Wallabies - all out attack. South Africa must win both matches against the Wallabies, get bonus points, prevent them from getting bonus points and hope they beat the All Blacks in the final match, if they want to stand any chance of winning the Tri-Nations title. Kick-off is at 3 o'clock tomorrow in Durban.

Bok coack Peter de Villiers has called on his players to be more ruthless and streetwise following last weekend's 19-nil defeat to the All Blacks. He wants them to stay on their feet longer and says that's crucial to bring support players into the game. If Victor Matfield's charges do that, they have the ability to score the four tries needed for a bonus point win.

But the Aussies are very good on defence and outright dangerous on the counter-attack. The Wallabies have also done a great job of talking up the world champions and coach Robbie Deans has ! surely devised another airtight strategy to suffocate the South Africans.

Conrad Jantjes will inject some pace into the match with his running and field kicking, while Jongi Nokwe has an eye for the try-line, if he gets the ball out wide. The experiment with Jean de Villiers at outside centre ends, so he should be pullingthe strings opposite the less experienced Berick Barnes, who is flanked by the strong running Sirling Mortlock and the slippery Matt Giteau. Let's hope Fourie du Preez is a bit sharper after last week - He should get great ball from the scrums and line-outs all afternoon.

Breakfast Headlines

Volvo Racers hit Southern Ocean squalls

The Volvo Ocean racers are starting to hit the heavy seas as the Southern ocean weather starts to worsen.

To make matters more interesting, most of the crews are suffering from flu. For the record, Puma is topping the leaderboard, followed by the twins of Telefonica Blue, and then Telefonica Black, both with South Africans on board. Blue has Jono Swain, with Mike Pammenter of Cape Town, pictured above, on Black. The leaderboard will change constantly, as the boats take different courses to find the best weather patterns.

Aussies looking sorry ahead of SA

The Aussies have lost again. Usually I'd be happy about the fact that the Proteas' number one enemy is finding it hard to win, but this time it's starting to affect the pleasure I get from a South African victory over the Baggy Greens.

The six wicket defeat to New Zealand on Friday makes it 2-0 to the Black Caps in the five match ODI series. On the back of a test and one day series defeat to the Proteas it's safe to say the alarm bells are ringing within Australian cricket circles.

But I'm not sure I like beating a team that seems to have no hope of even winning a one day series against the Black Caps. I'm very proud of the Proteas and I do think what they achieved down under was huge, but if we do go on to thrash them in the return series, like we should, I fear it will be a little like Padraig Harrington winning two majors while Tiger Woods is not playing.

I would've preferred having the Aussies bounce back big time agai! nst New Zealand and then suffer another hiding in SA. Unfortunately I don't think that will happen. Of course the Proteas will win, but it will be against the worst Aussie team in years...and that's okay.

Burger always gives his best

Stand-in Stormers captain Schalk Burger said he gave his 110 percent regardless whether he was captain or not.

Burger has lead the men since Jean de Villiers was injured against the Hurricanes in Wellington two weeks ago.

Burger and his boys have tough test ahead when they face the Chiefs at Newlands on Saturday.

The New Zealander's will want nothing less than a victory to increase their chances at getting a home semi-final.

Meanwhile, Burger said his team needed to produce results as their Super 14 campaign was about to end.

"You try and do the best your best all the time and unfortunately we as team have had a long tough season. Hopefully we can pull together and get a couple of victories."

Stormers coach Rassie Erasmus identified the Chief's open play as their biggest weapon ahead of the fixture.

Erasmus added he thought the biggest battle on the field will be amongst the forwards.

"Their scrums and line-outs is something that has really improved on since last year. The break down between our loose forwards and their loose forwards is going to be a great encounter."

2009 aerodynamic package: is it that bad?

At the recently concluded pre-season/post-season test (depending on how you looked at it) in Barcelona, BMW-Sauber brought aerodynamic pieces that would be used in the 2009 season; most prominently a front and rear wing. The consensus so far in regards to this aero package is that it is hideous and beneath Formula One. At this point, all I will say it is certainly a look to get used to.

However, in our world of instant gratification we must remember a couple of things:

1. This is still the initial on track test of such aerodynamic components. Only Williams and Honda have specifically brought 2009 spec wings to the Barcelona test.

2. In regards to teams that brought 2009 spec aerodynamic parts, the parts have essentially been graphed to 2008 spec chassis.

This is important to remember as at this point forms follows function especially as teams come to grips with the new regulations. Let us go back in time a little bit; wh! en V8's were re-introduced several years ago the first dyno test I heard of a Cosworth engine I thought, "this engine sounds like a hoover vacuum on steroids;" that is not a pleasant sound. Although I still believe nothing replaces the wailing sound of a unrestricted V10 engine, the V8 engine in its current formula and as currently installed is not the end of the world when it comes to acoustic appreciation. So, what is gleaned from this line of reasoning is that some of the first on-track tests of these parts does not mean that the aesthetics will not be improved as pre-season testing continues. It most certainly will as teams begin to optimize the designs in preparation for 2009, instead of modifying 2008 car packages. The most visible example of the 2009 aero package is from BMW-Sauber. At first glance it is a disturbing site. However again, let us realize that these bits have been graphed on to a F1.08B and not the definitive model to be raced at the first GP.
With that said, here are some images of the 2009 aero ! package on the BMW-Sauber provided by F1 Technical. Let me know how you feel.

Phil Thompson Urges George Gillett To Sell Up At Liverpool

Phil Thompson believes that Liverpool co-owner George Gillett should sell his stake in the Anfield outfit to Prince Faisal bin Fahed, the Saudi Arabian prince whose company F6 are believed to be in talks with the American.

Thompson, a former Reds defender who captained the club and won a host of honours in the 1970s and '80s, thinks that should Gillett sell then it would trigger his co-owner Tom Hicks into selling his stake in the club as well.

"The two guys bought the club, I'd like to think they bought it with all great faith and everything, but they've realised that 'soccer' as they call it is a little bit tougher than what they think," he told Sky Sports News.

"We're very patriotic towards our own, we're very tribal in this country. We love our football club and we believe we are different.

"They've not got to grips with that bond between fans and their ownership.
"I think it would be absolutely ideal if George Gillett can find a buyer. That'll maybe then trigger the motion from Tom Hicks to relinquish his fifty per cent.

"Because you can see by George doing that Tom is probably thinking 'this is the beginning of the end for us'.

"I think that would be best for all concerned. I wouldn't like to be in a position like that.

"So do the honourable thing."

Bitter-Sweet Debut For Kelly

Martin Kelly admitted his first Liverpool start in the defeat by Lyon left a sour taste in his mouth.

The former Academy talent was thrown into the starting line-up for Tuesday's UEFA Champions League clash following an injury to regular right-back Glen Johnson.

The England Under-20 international capped his full debut with an encouraging display until the 19-year-old picked up an injury in the second half and was substituted.

And Kelly confessed to mixed emotions on a night that saw his side slump to their second reverse in Group E and now face an uphill struggle to secure qualification to the last 16.
"I was happy to make my debut and the fans were fantastic with me but it was just disappointing with the final result," he told the club's official website.

"The lads were frustrated in the dressing room and it was tough to take losing right at the end.

"It was a cruel way to lose the game because I didn't think they looked like scoring in the second half to be honest.

"I thought we deserved to win and it was a frustrating night for us.

"Everyone is disappointed but we've got a game on Sunday against Manchester United and we need to put it right."

Kelly came close to opening his Liverpool account at the Kop end when he failed to connect with Fabio Aurelio's cross before Yossi Benayoun bailed him out with a composed finish.

And the teenage full-back is now intent on building from his first start in Reds colours.

"I was happy to see Yossi score because I would have probably got slated at hal! f-time for missing the chance," he added.

"I will t! ake a lo t of confidence from starting my first game for Liverpool but in football you are only as good as your last game.

"I've just got to keep working hard and put performances in week in, week out, and not just for one game."

Hodgson Refuses To Write Off Reds

Fulham manager Roy Hodgson has warned the Premier League's top teams not to write off Liverpool in the title race.

The Reds are nine points behind league leaders Chelsea after losing 3-1 at Craven Cottage on Saturday but Hodgson still believes they are challengers.

"If I was Manchester United or Arsenal or Chelsea I don't think I would be writing them off," Hodgson told 5 Live's Sportsweek programme.

"They could go on a good run, winning seven, eight, nine games in a row."

Liverpool's loss to Fulham was there sixth defeat in seven matches in all competitions, leaving them fift! h in the league table.

However, Hodgson has seen enough from the Merseyside club to convince him they are capable of turning their season around.

"You never know. They are a very good team, very well organised," said the 62-year-old.

"They have some very good players and are unlucky at the moment that their talisman Steven Gerrard isn't playing and Torres isn't 100% fit and has to be nursed through the games."

With only a quarter of the season gone, Hodgson also suggested it was too early to be rubbishing the credentials of any side and suggested there have been precedents of clubs overhauling pints deficits to claim the title.

"I remember not so long ago Manchester United were lingering in the middle of the table almost halfway through the season and went on to win it," he added.

After extending their unbeaten league run to four matches with Saturday's victory, Fulham lie 11th in the table on 14 points.

However, Hodgson remains realistic about his side's cha! nces of repeating last season's 7th-place finish, which saw them qualify for the Europa League.

"To be one of the best seven teams in the league is going to be very difficult for us on an annual basis," he explained. "The club is not necessarily geared for that.

"More and more money is being spent and the top four is rapidly becoming the top seven in terms of financial power.

"It would be nice if we could treat our fans to a season when they are not biting their nails into the last two or three games and be a good enough team to occasionally spring surprises like we did yesterday."

Second-half goals from Erik Nevland and Clint Dempsey sealed victory for Fulham on Saturday, after Fernando Torres had levelled following Bobby Zamora's 24th minute opener.

Liverpool also had Philipp Degen and Jamie Carragher sent off just prior to the third Fulham goal.

Supercross back in Canada

From Clear Channel Entertainment

AURORA, IL and MADRID, SPAIN -- Clear Channel Entertainment – Motor Sports and Dorna Off Road announced today the two international rounds of THQ World Supercross GP will return to Canada in 2005: Toronto's Rogers Centre (formerly SkyDome) on Dec. 3 and Vancouver's BC Place on Dec. 10.

Rogers Centre is home of Major League Baseball's Toronto Blue Jays and is currently undergoing a multi-million dollar renovation. Vancouver's BC Place Stadium is home of Canadian Football League's BC Lions and will be the site of Opening Ceremonies for the 2010 Winter Olympics. Each venue can hold up to 60,000 spectators.

"Based on the enthusiasm of fans, the support of our teams, riders and sponsors, and the efforts of both SkyDome (now Rogers Centre) and BC Place, it was an easy decision to bring the THQ World Supercross GP back to Canada," said Charlie Mancuso, president, Clear Cha! nnel Entertainment – Motor Sports. "We are looking forward to returning to Toronto and Vancouver this December with an even more extensive list of top riders, including our new THQ World Supercross GP champion Ricky Carmichael."

The two international races combined with 15 of the U.S. races (excluding the Daytona Supercross) comprise the 17-round THQ World Supercross GP. Last year Toronto marked Carmichael's return to supercross due to injuries that prevented him from riding in 2004. He won both the Toronto and Vancouver races on his new Makita Suzuki and clinched his first-ever THQ World Supercross GP championship on April 16 at Seattle's Qwest Field in front of 49,532 fans.

The entire 2005-2006 THQ World Supercross GP/THQ AMA Supercross Series schedule will be announced soon.

Reviewing Mel Kiper's Draft

I wanted to compare how close Mel Kiper comes to predicting the NFL draft with his Mock Draft. Anyone who follows the NFL Draft has heard of Mel Kiper, and he gets paid a lot of money to prognosticate the draft each year. Below is a list of Kiper's Top 15 selections in the mock draft. The bolded names are the ones that he got correct:

1. Detroit Lions: Matthew Stafford, QB, Georgia
2. St. Louis Rams: Jason Smith, OT, Baylor
3. Kansas City Chiefs: Aaron Curry, OLB, Wake Forest (Drafted Tyson Jackson)
4. Seattle Seahawks: Mark Sanchez, QB, USC (Drafted Aaron Curry)
5. Cleveland Browns: Tyson Jackson, DE, LSU (Traded down, Jets Drafted Mark Sanchez)
6. Cincinnati Bengals: Andre Smith, OT, Alabama
7. Oakland Raiders: Michael Crabtree, WR, Texas Tech (Drafted Darrius Heyward-Bey)
8. Jacksonville Jaguars: Eugene Monroe, OT, Virginia
9. Green Bay Packe! rs: B.J. Raji, DT, Boston College
10. San Francisco 49ers: Brian Orakpo, DE/OLB, Texas (Drafted Michael Crabtree)
11. Buffalo Bills: Brian Cushing, OLB, USC (Drafted Aaron Maybin)
12. Denver Broncos: Robert Ayers, DE, Tennessee (Drafted Knowshon Moreno)
13. Washington Redskins: Aaron Maybin, DE/OLB, Penn State (Drafted Brian Orakpo)
14. New Orleans Saints: Malcolm Jenkins, CB, Ohio State
15. Houston Texans: Chris Wells, RB, Ohio State

So Kiper got 6/15 correct in the first 15 picks of the first round.

Calipari Wildcats opened their Season

Campbellsville v Kentucky
The John Calipari era of Kentucky Basketball opened last night at Rupp arena with an exhibition game against Campbellsville. Kentucky won the game 74-38, winning the game was never in doubt (although we did lose to Gardner Webb a couple of years ago) but there were some good things and bad things about the game. Here are some of my observations:

* Eric Bledsoe was dominating last night. He looked very impressive. Bledsoe got to the rim with ease and finished once he got there. He also had a very impressive block under the basket.

*! One issue I can see from game one, shooting. They were decent from the field 28-56 for 50%, but struggled from the three point line shooting 3-14 for 21%. Darnell Dodson, who was billed as a sharp shooter, showed that he will throw the ball up when he gets a shot. Hopefully that will improve.

* Defense looked tremendous last night but we must keep in perspective that they were playing Campbellsvile. But I think the defense of this team will be very good.

* This team is extremely athletic but made a number of mental mistakes last night. Calipari played a lot of young players mixed in with some of the veterans and their inexperience showed at times. I think they will be the most athletic team on the floor from top to bottom no matter who they play but will they be able to put it all together?
Campbellsville v Kentucky

* There is so much depth at each position. John Wall did not play last night due to an NCAA infraction that will require him to sit two games this season. But with Wall and Bledsoe at the PG, and Cousins, Orton, Harrelson, and Stevenson in the post this team as depth from top to bottom.

The Sports Brief breaks down this weekend's MMA cards

The weekend that MMA fans have long awaited for is finally here. In what was supposed to be the debut of Affliction's fighting organization on the main stage, is now a competition between Free UFC fights on Spike and the stacked Affliction card on PPV. We here at the Sports Brief will take you through each and every fight going on this weekend. Rich Keefe covers the Affliction card, with his take on the UFC main event, while Tristan Besse breaks down UFC Fight Night 14 and also weighs in on Fedor vs. Sylvia. Rather than ripping on Dana White for hurting the sport, we'll just give you our picks.

Affliction: Banned

Preliminary bouts:

J.J. Ambrose def. Mike Pyle via submission in the 1st round!
Aleksander Emelianenko def. Paul Buentello via decision
Antonio Rogerio Nogueira def. Edwin Dewees via submission in the 1st round
Vitor Belfort def. Terry Martin via (T)KO in the 3rd round
Ray Lizama def. Justin Levens via decision
Mark Hominick def. Savant Young via (T)KO in the 2nd round

Only on PPV:

Babalu Sobral vs. Mike Whitehead

Babalu is one of the best submission fighters in the game. In his 29 victories, 16 have come via submission, including a guillotine choke on Shogun Rua. He has faced the best fighters in the world including Fedor, Chuck Liddell, Dan Henderson, Kevin Randleman, and the aforementioned Shogun. Whitehead on the other hand enters the ring with a 12 fight win streak. He's fought a lot at heavyweight in his career, but this one is at 205. Babalu's ground game will be too much for him, and there will no lucky 13 for Whitehead.

Babalu def. Whitehead via submission in the 2nd rou! nd

Matt Lindland vs. Fabio Negao

Matt "The Law" Lindland may be Anderson Silva's toughest test at 185, but we're not going to see that fight, thank you Dana White. In his last 11 fights Lindland has lost twice, to Fedor and Rampage, not bad. But he has not had a fight since April of 2007. There will be some ring rust for sure. Negao never fought in the UFC or Pride and hasn't faced anyone like Lindland. He could really put himself on the map with this huge upset, but I don't see that happening.

Lindland def. Negao via (T)KO in the 2nd round

Josh Barnett vs. Pedro Rizzo

Two guys here who each fought Randy Couture for the heavyweight title during his first reign. Rizzo could never beat The Natural while Barnett did win, but was disqualified after testing positive for steroids. It's also a rematch as this two men squared off in the UFC octagon back in Febru! ary of 2001. Rizzo earned a KO victory in the 2nd. Pedro "The Rock" last saw action in the fall of '07 while Barnett is 2-0 in '08. I think Barnett has a lot to prove and would love to face the winner of the Fedor fight at the next Affliction show. Surprisingly Barnett and Fedor never crossed paths in Pride. Barnett split two fights with current UFC interim heavy weight champ Big Nog, lost 3 times to Cro Cop, and defeated Mark Hunt and Aleksander Emelianenko.

Barnett def. Rizzo via submission in the 1st round

Andrei Arlovski vs. Ben Rothwell

Rothwell is riding an impressive 13 fight win streak, including all 9 of his fights in the IFL. Equally impressive will be his near 25 pound weight advantage over the Pit Bull. Arlovski just another disgruntled former UFC champion and star turned new Affliction poster boy. After beating Fabricio Werdum, Arlovski has 1 fight remaining on his contract, so Dana put! him on the under card where he beat Jake O'Brien. Way to trea! t a form er champ. Tons of intriguing match ups in the heavyweight division here in Affliction, and with a great performance Andrei could find himself headlining the next event.

Arlovski def. Rothwell via (T)KO in the 3rd round

Fedor Emelianenko vs. Tim Sylvia

This is it. Fedor is fighting a top of the line heavyweight for the first time since back in December of 2006, when he submitted Mark Hunt. Fedor has just 1 loss in his amazing career and it was in 2000, just his 3rd pro fight. The list of fighters he has beat is long and incredible, (Ricardo Arona, Babalu, Heath Herring, Big Nog (2), Mark Coleman (2), Kevin Randleman, Mirko Cro Cop, Mark Hunt, and Matt Lindland.) This guy is for real.

Sylvia's last fight was for the UFC's interim heavyweight championship against Big Nog. He lost by submission, but it was one of the more entertaining fights by Big Tim in quite a while. He's even admitte! d to just trying to not lose fights, thus watching him just push around a smaller opponent for 3-5 rounds and raising his arm to a chorus of boos. Well know he knows he is fighting the best. Really doesn't have a thing to lose here.

Affliction needs this to be an awesome "Fight of the Year" type of fight that people will be talking about long after it's over. Sylvia is tough to read. He could deliver that kind of fight, or he could just lumber around the ring until getting caught in a submission. I think it will be somewhere in between. It'll be exciting, but ultimately Sylvia will get caught, and lose via submission like he has against other great ground fighters like Big Nog and Frank Mir.

Fedor def. Sylvia via submission in the 2nd round

Tim Credeur def. Cale Yarbrough via submission in the 2nd round

Only on SpikeTV:

Jesse Taylor v. CB Dolloway

This is basically a match pitting two outstanding wrestlers with highly credible collegiate resumes against one another. That being said, my thought from TUF7 was that Jesse Taylor was a one-dimensional fighter. He was too big and too strong for anyone to handle his wrestling, and he essentially held people down while inflicting enough ground and pound to prevent the referee from standing it back up. CB Dolloway is just as strong a wrestler, so I expect his takedown defense to be very technical and effective in avoiding Taylor's wrath. Dolloway should be able to keep this on the feet long enough to land some strikes and earn a 29-28 decision. I think at some point Taylor will get ! him down and ride out a round.

CB Dolloway by unanimous decision.

Anthony Johnson v. Kevin Burns

Has anyone else seen "Rumble" Johnson's two wins via KO in the UFC? They were both exciting, and he reminds me of a Melvin Guillard at welterweight. Kevin Burns scored a shocking submission victory over Roan Carneiro in his UFC debut, but "Rumble" seems to have a bit more ring acumen than Guillard. If he puts Burns on his back, he'll have the ref stand him right back up. I think Johnson will absolutely light up the arena on Saturday night with a sensational KO that elevates him up the rankings in a flash. If he blows away Burns like I expect him too, I'd actually encourage Joe Silva to pit him against Josh Koscheck and see where that one goes.

Anthony Johnson via KO in 1st round

Cain Velasquez v. Jake O'Brien

Interesting match-up her! e. Velasquez is being touted as the second coming of Christ in! the hea vyweight division. In fact his trainer has been quoted as saying he could defeat Randy Couture RIGHT NOW and needs only a year before he can take out Fedor. Wow. That's some mighty high praise. O'Brien, meanwhile, seems to be a UFC whipping boy. He was brought in to be a cake walk for Heath Herring, but shocked a live SpikeTV audience. Then he was injured, then later brought in as an opponent for former champ Andrei Arlovski. That went as planned, and O'Brien was released again, only to be brought back as an opponent for Velasquez. The little I've seen of Cain is impressive. This guy is great on his feet and also has a solid wrestling pedigree. O'Brien won't have the tools to compete, as he's a one-dimensional guy with his wrestling.

Cain Velasquez by (T)KO in the 1st round

Hermes Franca v. Frankie Edgar

Edgar is coming off his first professional loss, a bout in which he was outwrestled and outstruck by G! ray Maynard. Franca, meanwhile, returns from his suspension after testing positive for steroids in the same title bout that Sherk tested positive. How about that! Edgar is a wrestler who pounds out decision victories, while Franca is a tested veteran with 11 submission wins to his credit. Look for Edgar to take this fight to the ground, only to have Franca catch him in a submission.

Hermes Franca via 2nd round submission

Brandon Vera v. Reese Andy

The light heavyweight debut for Vera and the UFC debut for Andy. I don't think the weight cut will be a factor for Vera, as he walks around at 225 and fights around 215. He's just so athletic and solid with his striking that he was able to hang with the heavyweights. Andy, meanwhile, is just a name to me. I've never seen the guy fight nor do I claim to know anything about him, except what his Fight Finder page on Sherdog tells me. He's an IFL lifer with a! bunch of decision wins. I think Vera will make a statement he! re, but I also don't know if his stay in this division will last long. He wants to avenge his loss to Verdum, and with Frank Mir getting a title shot – a guy that Vera destroyed – he has some issues to resolve with the heavyweights.

Vera by decision

Main Event

Anderson Silva v. James Irvin

The light heavyweight debut for Anderson Silva, as well! Imagine if they had Silva and Vera debut AGAINST each other. I should have Joe Silva's job. Anyway, Irvin is a dangerous striker, no doubt about it, but he's fighting arguably the most technical striker in the world, pound for pound. This is the middleweight champ who destroyed a former 205-pounder (Rich Franklin) twice, as well as Dan Henderson, who cut from 205 to contend for the UFC crown. Silva is moving up in weight, and while I don't know how much stronger he'll be because of it; his striking will be quicker than Irv! in's. And if this goes to the ground, lest we forget that Silva is a dangerous submission guy with a black belt in jiu-jitsu. Irvin, meanwhile, just blew away one of the more feared strikers in the division in Houston Alexander. He finished "The Assassin" in a record-tying eight seconds, which is impressive considering Alexander seemed to have a strong chin up to that point. Ten of Irvin's wins have come by some form of a KO, so he's definitely game. This will be explosive for sure.

Silva by T(KO) late in the 1st round

My take on the Main Event of Affliction: Banned

Fedor is the pound for pound best on some experts rankings, while Sylvia is the former UFC champ who has come under fire lately for his passive nature in the ring. As Keefe said, he's admitted to just trying not to lose fights. But I was actually impressed with Big Tim in his last fight against Nogueira for the interim UFC Heavyweight t! itle. He was aggressive, controlled the fight on the feet, and! was dom inating the Big Nog until he got caught with a sick submission in the 3rd round. Sylvia has a distinct height and reach advantage, much like he did against Randy Couture back in March of 2007. But he's a different fighter.

Fedor, meanwhile, has been inactive lately having fought twice in '06 and twice in '07. This is first tilt in '08. His last win was against that giant Hong Man Choi, who also happened to be a tomato can. He fought three name opponents prior to that (Lindland, Coleman and Mark Hunt), but Lindland fought up two weight classes, Coleman is overrated and Hunt is a K-1 guy. Sylvia is clearly his toughest test in a long, long time.

I think Sylvia will come out much in the same way he did against Nog, using his jab and aggressively mixing in nice combinations trying to pepper Fedor. Sylvia has a great, great sprawl, and his long, lanky build causes problems for guys on top of him. If he knocks down Fedor, I don't think he makes the same! mistake as he did against Nog. He'll certainly try and finish the fight, but if Fedor comes to and regains his composure, look for Sylvia to back off and stand it back up. I'll be shocked if he gets submitted again. I'm picking the upset…

Sylvia via decision

Keefe's take on the main event at UFC Fight Night 14

Anderson Silva has just decimated the middleweight division. Hendo, Franklin, Leben, it doesn't matter. Brining the Spider up to fight some of the guys from the loaded light heavyweight division makes some sense to me. And why not have this spectacle go up against the Affliction card. Well I'm not sold on James Irvin. Sure he has knockout power, but he is not a Top 10 guy in the division, and maybe not Top 15. If Silva fought a Soko, Rashad Evans, Thiago Silva, Wanderlei, Jardine, or even Vera as Besse mentioned, I would be tempted to watch the UFC live. But I'm not. Silva should smoke this guy like eve! ryone else since he's stepped into the octagon.

Silva d ef. Irvin via (T)KO in the 1st round

The Worst and Most Insulting Trade Offer Ever

Today I received a trade offer in one of my ESPN Fantasy Leagues. A GM represnting "An Entire Army of Jew Robots" offered to send me and our team ("Kenny Fuckin Powers") Alex Rios and Scott Baker in exchange for our star OF Manny Ramirez. Talk about living up to your team name. I was so embarrassed and insulted by this trade offer, that not only did I sent him a long, detailed response breaking down my assessment of the trade and why I would not accept it, but I also posted the e-mail on the league page to give the rest of the league an idea as to how stupid, moronic and incompetent this man is as the GM of a fantasy baseball team. To quote Ashley Schaeffer, Ashley Schaeffer BMW, "You'd have to be damn straight retarded" to accept this deal. My e-mail to this moron is below:

I'm actually insulted by this trade offer. To the point where I'm not even sure I want to consider a counter offer. You're asking for a perennial .300/30/100 guy in exchange for the foll! owing:
Rios: A) never driven in 100 runs; B) hit over 20 HR once (24 in 2007); C) hit over .300 once (.302 in 2006). I recognize the steals are a nice asset, but I'd be remiss to ignore the fact that he's hitting .206 with ZERO homeruns and one stolen base to go with 7 RBI so far in 2009. This is while batting in the middle of an offense that is currently ranked 3rd in average, 1st in RBI, 3rd in runs and 3rd in homeruns in ALL of Major League Baseball.
Baker: First start of the season - 4.0 IP, 6 ER; Second start of the season (Today) - 4.2 IP, 6 ER. In fact, I couldn't help but notice that you didn't even start Baker today against Boston. Shows how confident you are in his ability as a pitcher.
You offered Brett Myers or Armando Gallaraga instead of Baker. Myers has an ERA over 5 right now, a career ERA in the mid 4's and his ERA has gone up every year since 2005. Galarraga isn't bad, but after everything I said about Rios, those two won't do it together. I! n fact if you even wanted a chance at this trade, it would've ! been LES S insulting to offer up Galarraga up front. At least the dude is pitching well right now and has some upside. That's a guy you sell high. As far as Rios and the rest of the garbage you came at me with, those are guys that I'll buy low...buying low does not pertain to Manny Ramirez. Especially when he's hitting .340 with 3 bombs and 10 RBI, including an 8 for 16 run in his last 4 games with all three of those bombs coming over that span.
Bottom line: I can't help but feel you think I'm some sort of asshole. That being said, I'd like to decline your offer...courteously, of course.

BJal's Lock du Jour - Friday, October 23

So BJal has won two in a row. Unbelievable. But we've been here before. Three makes a winning streak, and I don't think he has it in him. Army +10.5 over Rutgers. And he's even given us a bonus, lumping in tomorrow's pick. He's taking Notre Dame -7.5 over Boston College. I personally love this pick, and I'm tempted to put my college loans on it. I'm predicting a 27-17 Irish victory.

By the way, tomorrow night is UFC104 with Machida defending his light heavyweight title for the first time against Shogun. I'll be tweeting results and such (@tbesse29) so check it out.

BJal's Lock du Jour(s): Army +10.5 over Rutgers; Notre Dame -7.5 over B.C.
Overall record: 6-9

Liga Sagres Saturday Review

An early goal from Radamel Falcao settled the big game in the Liga Sagres as FC Porto defeated nine-man Sporting 1-0.

Falcao netted in the third minute while the Lisbon side's hopes of a comeback were hit by the sendings off of Correa Anderson Polga and Miguel Veloso in the second half.

The result moved third-placed Porto three points ahead of their rivals.

Benfica closed to within two points of leaders Braga with a 5-0 thrashing of Leixoes.

David Lui! z scored the opener on the stroke of half-time and second-half efforts from Oscar Cardozo (penalty), Nascimento Ramires, Victorio Maxi Pereira and Cardozo again wrapped up a comprehensive victory.

Leixoes also finished the match with nine men, Christian Pouga seeing red in the 28th minute and Miguel Nuno Silva following 10 minutes after half-time in the penalty incident.

Naval claimed their first victory of the campaign, a double from substitute Mehdi Kerrouche earning a 2-1 victory over Maritimo.

Pacos Ferreira were 1-0 winners over Vitoria Setubal thanks to Araujo Maykon's early goal while Rio Ave and Academica drew 0-0.

Cabrera-Bello wins monthly award

Rafael Cabrera-Bello has been named European Tour golfer of the month for September for his stunning final round of 60 to win the Austrian Open.

There has never been a 59 on the circuit and the 25-year-old became only the third player in history - Ian Woosnam and Jamie Spence were the others - to claim victory with a closing 60.

The Challenge Tour graduate began the last round eight behind Benn Barham, but grabbed 11 birdies and even had a 30-foot eagle putt at the last for 59.

"It is ! a huge honour to win this award," he said. "It is a pleasure to see my name alongside many great players that have won this award in the past and it gives me a lot of motivation and confidence for the future."

Other contenders for the award included Swede Alex Noren and South African James Kingston, winners respectively of the European Masters and Mercedes-Benz Championship, and England's Chris Wood, who won 4.5 points from a possible five for Britain and Ireland at the Vivendi Trophy match against Continental Europe.

Stuttgart 1-3 Sevilla

Sevilla recorded a third successive victory, at the expense of Stuttgart, to continue their perfect start in Champions League Group G.

The Spaniards were three up after a goal in each half by Sebastien Squillaci and one from Jesus Navas, and substitute Elson's sweetly-struck free-kick for the hosts was mere consolation.

After a quiet opening, Sevilla threatened for the first time just before the quarter-hour mark when Luis Fabiano's right-footed shot from inside th! e penalty area was blocked by Khalid Boulahrouz.

The table-toppers went in front when Squillaci met Adriano Correia's cross with a firm header into the top right corner in the 23rd minute.

Long-range shots from Alexander Hleb and Cacau - the first wide, the second comfortably saved - were the highlights of Stuttgart's response before half-time.

Correia, such an important contributor in the build-up to Sevilla's goal, had to go off injured nine minutes before the break and was replaced in the midfield by Diego Perotti.

Stuttgart, meanwhile, continued to press - dominating possession and territory without reward in front of goal.

Navas rose above the mediocrity of a scrappy opening to the second half, first with a 12-yard shot which flashed just wide and then with Sevilla's second goal in the 55th minute when he was on hand with a right-foot finish from close range after Jens Lehmann had dropped Perotti's cross.

Stuttgart boss Markus ! Babbel made three substitutions in the 69th minute - Elson, Pa! vel Pogr ebniak and Thomas Hitzlsperger coming on for Hleb, Cacau and Christian Trasch respectively in the 69th minute.

The immediate consequence was another blow to home aspirations when Squillaci added his second and Seville's third goal, heading in from six yards on the end of Ivica Dragutinovic's free-kick.

But Elson did soon make his presence felt with an unstoppable right-footed free-kick from 30 yards which gave goalkeeper Herrera Javi Varas no chance in the 73rd minute.

Elson was soon in the action again, first with an inswinging corner which Varas had to punch clear under pressure and then an overhead shot just clearing the bar.

Zdravko Kuzmanovic went even closer in the 83rd minute - with a left-footer which Varas had to tip over the bar.

In the end, though, it was all too little too late.

Eredivisie Saturday Review

Feyenoord moved up to fourth place in the Eredivisie as Denny Landzaat's goal earned a 1-0 win at home to VVV Venlo.

Landzaat was on hand to score in the 26th minute after VVV goalkeeper Kevin Begois had made a hash of Roy Maakay's ball into the area.

The result took the Rotterdam giants level on points with third-placed Ajax, who take on AZ Alkmaar tomorrow.

League leaders FC Twente, who play FC Groningen tomorrow, are three points further ahead.

Eri! k Falkenburg capped a stunning hat-trick with the 90th-minute winner as Sparta Rotterdam claimed a 3-2 win away to ADO Den Haag.

Falkenburg put the visitors in the lead in the ninth and 38th minutes, with Danny Buys (28) and Charlton Vicento (42) grabbing the equalisers.

That left the stage for Falkenburg to take advantage of a calamitous defensive mix-up to tap home the winning goal.

The game had earlier been delayed 15 minutes after a pitch invasion.

A 33rd-minute strike from Anthony Lurling earned a 1-0 victory for NAC Breda over basement boys RKC Waalwijk.

The result means the visitors, who also lost Gijs Luirink to a late red card, remain marooned on three points, four adrift of second-bottom Willem II

Elsewhere, Willy Overtoom and Sebastian Steur scored in each half as Heracles Almelo claimed a 2-0 win at Vitesse Arnhem.

Manchester United 2 Blackburn Rovers 0

The Premier League game between Manchester United and Blackburn Rovers at Old Trafford on Saturday Oct 31 2009.

They might still appear as graceful as a supertanker performing a three-point turn, but Dimitar Berbatov and Wayne Rooney at least ensured that Manchester United's search for their X-factor continued with another hard-earned victory.

Cristiano Ronaldo's summer departure ensures that opponents such as Blackburn, whose sole aim was to escape Old Trafford with a point, can no longer be blown away by the mercurial talents of the £80m Portuguese.

The victories that Ronaldo practically earned by himself in previous seasons now require patience, on and off the pitch, but having lost with a whimper at Liverpool last Sunday, a victory of any kind was all that mattered on this occasion.

Eleven goals conceded in ten Premier League games prior to this fixture tells its own story. United's back four has been sieve-like and the main pillars of the defence, Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic, failed to even make the bench against Sam Allardyce's team.

Both players watched the proceedings from the directors' box as a result of calf injuries. Vidic has been troubled with the problem for weeks, prompting United to send the Serbi! an for a consultation with a specialist earlier this week. !

Ferdinand, 31 next Saturday, has endured back and groin injuries prior to his current calf problem. His form has been patchy at best, both for club and country, and there is every chance that Ferguson could have chosen to drop him for this game had he been fit.

But have Ferdinand and Vidic merely been compromised by their injuries? Until they regain full fitness, it will be impossible to judge whether they are on the slippery slope or simply paying the price for playing while not fully fit.

Their replacements for this game, Wes Brown and Jonny Evans, would walk into most Premier League starting XI's. Neither has let United down in the past, but they are more Carling Cup than Champions League.

If Barcelona or Real Madrid come to town in the Champions League knockout stages, Ferguson will not want Ferdinand and Vidic sat in the stands.

He needs the pair of them back to their best if United are to challenge fo! r the major prizes.

It might just take more than Ferdinand and Vidic rediscovering their form, however, for United to claim a fourth successive title.

While they unquestionably dominated a Blackburn team defending en masse in an attempt to end a run of heavy away defeats, United lacked the cutting edge provided last season by Cristiano Ronaldo and, to a lesser extent, Carlos Tévez.

Despite spending lengthy periods camped in the Rovers half, United did not test goalkeeper Paul Robinson until the 30th minute, when Dimitar Berbatov's downward header from Antonio Valencia's cross was tipped over by the former England keeper.

Prior to that, Berbatov and Valencia had seen efforts blocked, while El-Hadji Diouf, on a rare foray forward, forced John O'Shea to make a timely challenge in the penalty area.

United lack panache and pizzazz without Ronaldo, but the Portuguese will not be coming back, so the! y must find a way of cutting teams open without him.

! And bar ring an unlikely £50m-plus move for Franck Ribery or David Villa in January, Ferguson must sharpen United's attacking threat with what he already has at his disposal.

In other words, he needs Berbatov to justify his £30.75m price tag and Michael Owen to turn the clock back ten years. Expecting Nani to come good is clearly a pointless exercise and the £17m winger prompted more groans than usual from the stands during another exasperating performance.

By the 53rd minute, the United fans had begun chanting 'Attack! Attack! Attack!' in an effort to inject some purpose in Ferguson's players.

But United were already attacking incessantly. The problem was that they weren't getting anywhere until Berbatov finally broke the deadlock two minutes later.

The Bulgarian was picked out by Patrice Evra with his back to goal on the penalty spot and, a swift turn and shot later, the ball was in the back of the net past the ! helpless Robinson. In terms of dominance of possession, the goal was well overdue.

As was Nani's substitution, for the Premier League debutant Gabriel Obertan, on 63 minutes.

The £3m purchase from Bordeaux made an eye-catching debut at Barnsley in midweek and he could have scored on 66 minutes having been set free by Evra.

A weak finish following a 40-yard run denied him a fairytale entrance, however.

Rooney made it 2-0 in the 87th minute when he guided in Anderson's cross with a left-foot volley from the edge of the six-yard box.

Australia beat India by three runs in fifth ODI despite Sachin Tendulkar's heroics

A magnificent 175 from Sachin Tendulkar overshadowed a maiden century from Shaun Marsh, but it was Australia who came out triumphant by three runs in the fifth one-day international against India in Hyderabad.

Marsh was twice dropped but made the most of those reprieves as he powered to 112, while opening partner Shane Watson (93), Cameron White (57) and Ricky Ponting (45) all made substantial contributions to power Australia to a massive 350 fo! r four.

Tendulkar replied in style and, aided brilliantly by Suresh Raina (59), brought India within sniffing distance of victory, but Australia kept their heads as India were bowled out for 347 with three deliveries to spare.

The win gave Australia a 3-2 lead in the seven-match series.

The visitors began well, with Watson getting them off to a flyer as he smashed the new-ball bowlers around.

He blasted first-change bowler Munaf Patel for a four and a six in his second over to quickly close in on a half-century and clobbered Ashish Nehra for another four and six to reach the milestone off just 40 deliveries.

Watson motored along nicely once past the 50 mark, completely dominating an opening stand with Marsh worth 145.

Australia's free scoring was finally curbed with the introductio! n of Harbhajan Singh and Yuvraj Singh, the two bowling accu! rately i n tandem and asserting a degree of control.

But a ragged performance from India in the field stalled the breakthrough as Marsh, who had begun unconvincingly, was dropped on 29 by Mahendra Singh Dhoni off Harbhajan, the wicketkeeper failing to grasp a top-edge chance.

Watson was dropped by Yuvraj off his own bowling on 90, but did not last long thereafter as he fell short of a century, slog-sweeping Harbhajan straight to Ravindra Jadeja at deep midwicket.

Marsh was again reprieved just after reaching his half-century with Virender Sehwag making a mess of a fairly straightforward chance at cover.

Ponting was then bowled by Praveen Kumar, but Marsh began to score fluently from then on - his second 50 came off just 41 deliveries - and celebrated exuberantly once he reached his century.

He fell while trying to up the scoring, but White and Michael Hussey (31 not out) provided the flourish at the death. !

White was snared off the last ball, but the Victorian had done the damage, putting on 80 off just 43 deliveries for the fourth wicket with Hussey.

India's reply began in usual sprightly fashion with Sehwag providing the initial thrust.

The opener had clubbed 38 off 30 deliveries when Doug Bollinger, who had grassed him earlier when the batsman was on 21, held a splendid catch running back from short fine-leg to send back the opener.

Debutant seamer Clint McKay then struck vital blows in the top order, sending back Gautam Gambhir and Dhoni cheaply, while Yuvraj was snaffled by Watson as the home side slipped to 162 for four.

Tendulkar, who had needed seven runs at the start of the innings to reach 17,000 in ODIs, was tentative at first, but once he passed that milestone he opened up to play another superb innings.

Tendulkar was joined by Raina, the left-hander providing excellent support as ! the match swung India's way under their charge.

Ten! dulkar, who had smashed Nathan Hauritz for consecutive sixes in an over, reached his 45th ODI century off just 81 deliveries and continued to flay the bowlers around as India closed in on the target.

Australia too were far from flawless in the field, White spilling Raina while the batsman was on zero proving costly.

Raina went on to add 137 for the fifth wicket with Tendulkar, reaching his 12th ODI half-century with a towering six of McKay.

The match turned again with Watson snaring the left-hander and his replacement, the feisty Harbhajan, in the same over.

India had needed 52 from 45 deliveries at the dismissal of Raina, but Jadeja (23) kept the chase on course until he lost Tendulkar, McKay's third victim.

India then unravelled with Jadeja run out and Nehra going quickly.

Eight were needed from the last over, but Praveen Kumar was run out while attempting a second run, the wicket handing Australia vi! ctory.

Fonte: http://www.tuttomercatoweb.com/

Classifica dopo la 9^ giornata: Frosinone 18; Cesena e Padova 16; Torino, Ascoli e Cittadella 14; Sassuolo, Ancona*, Brescia*, Empoli* e Modena 13; Vicenza e Grosseto 12; Lecce* 11; Albinoleffe e Reggina* 9; Gallipoli* (-1), Triestina* e Piacenza* 8; Crotone (-2) 7; Mantova 6; Salernitana 2. (* una partita in meno. Ancona-Piacenza, Brescia-Gallipoli, Empoli-Triestina, Lecce-Reggina, saranno recuperate il 27/10/2009) (Crotone -2 punti, Gallipoli -1 punto in cl! assifica).
Pros! simo tur no, 10^ giornata 16-17-19/10/09 ore 15.30: Albinoleffe – Sassuolo (19/10 ore 20.45), Ascoli – Torino, Cesena – Brescia, Cittadella – Piacenza, Crotone – Vicenza, Grosseto –Padova, Lecce – Salernitana (16/10 ore 20.45), Mantova – Empoli, Modena –Frosinone, Reggina – Ancona, Triestina – Gallipoli.

Buon campionato a tutti……

FANTANEWS AMARCORD

Ecco a voi un altro Fantanews Amarcord scovato in archivio: anno 2004. Campos ti ricordi?

Stranissimo. Ho SOGNATO IL FUTURO. Mi trovavo nell'anno 2004.

E c'erano situazioni impossibili. Baggio a 37 anni giocava in provincia. E riusciva ancora a fare magie. Punizione. Incrocio dei pali. 203 gol. Ma in nazionale giocavano Marazzina, Favalli, Barone, Corradi. Del Vecchio aveva circa 30 presenze in nazionale. Impossibile. Fantascienza.

Iaquinta, Fiore, Iaquinta, Locatelli, Bazzani. Nel secondo tempo realizzava una rimonta fantascientifica. Baggio, Cesar, Cesar, Cesar, Martins. Vittoria. 84 a 79. E urlava: SONO CAMPIONE D'ITALIA!!Anche questa sembra fantascienza. Ma poi capisco.... non e' fanatascienza. E SOLO FANTA-CALCIO.

In difesa Nesta, Oddo, Chivu, Legrottaglie a centrocampo Seedorf, Cesar! , Pinzi, Gattuso, Zambrotta. In attaccoDi Natale, Chiesa, Cassano, Baggio, Martins. Ottimi elementi. La forza della squadra e' la continuita'. Sempre al di sopra dei 72. Senza sprechi. 1 doppietta alla volta. All'inizio segnava Chivu. Poi Chiesa. Poi Cassano. Poi Di Natale.
