South Africa has bounced back from its most disappointing Olympics to celebrate its most successful Paralympics. We finished sixth on the medals table with 21 gold, three silver and six bronze medals. This morning Ernst van Dyk grabbed bronze in the last event of the Games - the T54 marathon. Yesterday Oscar Pistorius won his third gold medal and set a new 400 metre world record of 47.49 seconds...

FIFA president Sepp Blatter has called former president Nelson Mandela, the 'architect' behind South Africa's hosting of the 2010 World Cup. Blatter also presented Madiba with a special replica of the World Cup trophy.

Liverpool came from behind to beat Marseille 2-1 in their opening match of the UEFA Champions League. Reds skipper Steven Gerrard scored a wonder goal and the winning penalty after Ryan Babel was brough! t down in the box. Chelsea smashed Bordeaux 4-0. More good news for the Blues is that captain John Terry will face Man United on Sunday after a successful appeal against his one match ban. Atletico Madrid beat PSV 3-0, Inter beat Panathinaikos 2-0 and Barcelona beat Sporting 3-1.

The UEFA Champions League continues tonight with Manchester United facing Villareal. Christiano Ronaldo will return from injury for the Red Devils, but Dimitar Berbatov is doubtful and Michael Carrick is out for up to six weeks.

Vodacom Western Province are looking for three wins in a row as they still aim for a place in the Currie Cup semi-finals. They take on Griquas at Newlands on Friday night.
